Hello everybody.

Today’s phrasal verb is TO GET BACK TO someone ON something.

TO GET BACK TO someone ON something

Yesterday we had TO GET something BACK and TO GET somebody BACK FOR doing something like “to take revenge”.

Today’s TO GET BACK TO someone ON something, and this means to call someone or email someone or just speak to someone later because right now you’re too busy to deal with it.

Okay?

It’s very common at work. When you’re trying to speak to someone who’s busy.

You know?

You might say:

– “Sorry, I’m a bit busy. Can I GET BACK TO you ON that later?”, for example.

Okay?

So, here’s a situation, it could be a phone call

[phone] – ring… ring…

[phone] – ring… ring… ring…

Jeff – “Hello?”

Luke – “Hello, is that… is that Jeff?”

Jeff – “Yeah. That’s right. This is Jeff. Is that Luke?”

Luke – “Yes, it is. Hi! I was just wondering if you’d had a chance to look at those figures that I’d sent you?”

Jeff – “Oh, sorry Luke. I haven’t had a chance. I’ve been a bit tied up. I’ve been eating a biscuit. Do you think I’ll be able to GET BACK TO you ON that later?”

Luke – “Yeah, sure. Just GET BACK TO me whenever you can. I’ll be in the office all day.”

Jeff – “Okay then, Luke. I’ll GET BACK TO you ON that as soon as possible. Let me just deal with this delicious biscuit, and I’ll call you.:

Luke – “Okay, Jeff. Thanks. Speak to you later”

Jeff – “Speak to you later, Luke”

Luke – “Okay, bye”

Jeff – “Bye, goodbye!”

…and then later on,

[phone] – ring… ring… ring…

[phone] – ring… ring… ring…

Jeff – “Hello?”

Luke – “Hi, Jeff! It’s… it’s Luke again. I was just wondering if you had a chance to GET BACK TO me ON those figures?”

Jeff – “oh, sorry Luke. Still a little bit tied up, eating a donut. It’s delicious.”

Luke – “Okay, do you think you’ll be able to GET BACK TO me ON that at some point today?”

Jeff – “Yeah. I should GET BACK TO you on that later.”

Luke – “Okay. Could you tell me when you might be able to GET BACK TO me ON that?”

Jeff – “Eeeeeee…, it’s a bit tricky. I’m gonna have to GET BACK TO you ON that too, I’m afraid.”

Luke – “Okay. So just to clarify. You’re gonna GET BACK TO me ON the fact that you’re gonna have to GET BACK TO me ON the figures that I sent to you which you weren’t able to GET BACK TO me ON earlier on today? Is that correct?”

Jeff – “Yes, Luke! Exactly! That’s correct and I’ll GET BACK TO you ON all of that just as soon as I’ve eaten this donut. Okay, so…, I expect it should be by the end of the day and I’ll GET BACK TO you ON that properly, and then we sort all of this mess out”

Luke – “Okay, Jeff. Thank you very much. Just, you know, just do GET BACK TO me as soon as you can. I know that the donut are obviously delicious and very important, but these sales figures are crucial. So, please, do GET BACK TO me as soon as you can.”

Jeff – “Okay, Luke. I think the listeners have got it now. I think, they’ve probably got the fact that I’m gonna GET BACK TO you ON that later.”

Luke – “Okay, then Jeff. Great! Well, I don’t wanna hold you up any longer. You’ll GET BACK on that donut. Okay.”

Jeff – “Okay Luke. I’ll. I’m gonna GET BACK TO the donut and I’ll GET BACK TO you ON that…, ON that thing about the figures as soon as I can.”

Luke – “Okay then, Jeff.”

Jeff – “Alright?”

Luke – “Goodbye. Good luck with the donut.”

Jeff – “Thanks a lot. Bye then.”

Luke – “Goodbye”
