459. Lazing on a Sunny Afternoon

Rambling on about so-called “facts” I found on the internet, while sitting in direct sunshine wishing I had beer.

Introduction

In this episode I’m just sitting in the sunshine and I just want to ramble with absolutely no preparation. I’ve been doing quite a lot of fairly serious episodes about language, and politics and there’s more to come. But in this one I don’t want to feel obliged to make any serious points at all. Instead I’d much rather just be light hearted and talk about whatever comes into my head in an effort to just relax and have fun.

Nothing is written down. I have literally no idea what I’m going to talk about. I’ve got loads of episodes in the pipeline but for this one, it’s just turn on the microphone and let’s go. It might be pretty inane and stupid. Don’t take too much of it seriously. But who knows what kind of vocab or idioms will pop up, and maybe some other bits.

So – expectations should be a full on ramble with no particular language aim than to just follow the English as it accompanies my stream of consciousness.

Let’s go through 9facts.co.uk. I have no idea if they are actually facts, but it’ll give me a springboard to just ramble about whatever I come across.

What an amazing voice Dwayne Johnson has! Yesterday we watched Disney’s “Vaiana” on DVD. I absolutely love this movie! It’s sooo uplifting and bright! :))

Hi Luke, this episode is so entertaining and lots of fun! As usual, I listened to it when I was jogging in the woods, a really good start of the day. Couldn’t help laughing when I heard some hilarious facts. For instance, the toilet one, the people who came up with this idea must be very creative (in a slightly strange way):) I hope you had a good sandwich and a cold bear after recording this episode. You sang and played guitar beautifully, I love it. You’ve got a nice deep voice. Thank you for taking time to provide some real fun to us. It’s highly appreciated! Take care. Isabelle

The best one for doing housework and other multitasking stuff! I love those ramble episodes mostly! The gardening or ironing can be forgotten for a while whilst listening to such a British talking about nothing.

You are a proper man in a proper place:-))

Agnes, do you remember Olly Richards from the “I Will Teach You a Language” podcast? I was listening to one of his episodes the other day, called “179: Can you become fluent only by listening?” — and he was saying there that we shouldn’t be multitasking while listening, but instead: sitting there, concentrate on each word, otherwise it would be a waste of your time (something like that). Do you agree on that?

Cat, yes I remember him but I haven’t listened to this episode yet. So, in my opinion, listening while doing something else can be helpful and I found it very useful. I’ve been using this method since I remember, actually, my entire learning English is provided by listening. When I try to listen sitting at the desk and focus only on that I become bored and do something else instead. But the truth is that some words pass by unnoticeable. If I want to remember some of them I have to focus more on that. You know what, I’ve got used to listening to English, it’s like an addiction. So when I start doing the housework or the gardening I put my earphones on, because I miss something and I feel uncomfortable if I don’t do it.

You can listen to English whatever you do, it isn’t waste of time I guess. On the contrary with grammar and doing grammar drills. I have to be focused otherwise it is a waste of time…

Fully agree with you Agnes! Talking nonsense with a British accent is much more fun than house chores. It was so relaxing and entertaining. Have a good day! Take care, Isabelle

Isabelle, I definitely forget what I do (some unpleasant stuff, I mean for instance the ironing – the most boring home duty!), listening relaxes me, makes me feel comfortable, especially listening to nothing. On the contrary, when serious stuff comes, you have to be more focused to pick up important words consciously.

        have a good evening!
